DESCRIPTION: EPW - George Etherington, London, verge fusee, 56mm, gilt OF original pair cases, outer with shagreen and piqué finish, gold champlevé dial, KWKS, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock with mask at neck, possible s# under balance wheel is partially visible but not readily legible. Per Brian Loomes' "Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World," George Etherington was free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1689 and died in 1729.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, signature plate with some darkening, pitting and evident past polishing, some fine scratches, mvt release latch is small and recessed from surrounding dial surface necessitating use of a small tool to catch its edge for mvt release; excellent dial, some scratches around mvt release latch, black appears to have been re-executed with paint; fair mismatched hands, minute with ample oxide; outer case shows light wear, some small losses of shagreen at rear perimeter with green paint added to match color, one piqué element lost from rear, button latch good, case closing with some gap in areas; inner case shows light wear, mild circumferential denting, some mild dings and shallow dents elsewhere, brassy pendant; tight bow is a gold-plated white metal replacement; domed glass crystal with edge chipping at bottom, some fine scratches.
